What Android phones support RCS messaging?

Asked Dec 15, 2024, 08:00 AM Viewed 418 times

I've been reading about Rich Communication Services (RCS) and how it enhances traditional SMS messaging with features like read receipts, typing indicators, and media sharing. I'm considering upgrading my phone and want to make sure it supports RCS natively. Can someone provide a list of Android phones or manufacturers that support this feature and any additional steps I might need to take to enable it?

Full RCS support across all models. Most of the recent Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series support RCS. However, the availability can depend on your carrier. Newer models since the OnePlus 7 tend to support RCS. Support is available but check carrier compatibility.

For enabling RCS, make sure Google Messages is set as your default SMS app. Open the app, go to Settings > Chat Features, and enable them if they're available. If not, it might be due to lack of carrier support.

RCS is indeed a game-changer for messaging on Android. Apart from the popular brands, even other smartphones launched after 2018 tend to have built-in RCS support, thanks to Google's universal profile for RCS implementation. However, the key is your carrier's support for RCS. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in the U.S., for instance, support RCS.

If you're looking to enable RCS on your phone, ensure that the Google Messages app is updated. Then, open the app, tap on 'More' (three dots), go to Settings, select 'Chat Features,' and if RCS is available for your carrier, you can toggle it on. Keep in mind that RCS might not work when messaging international numbers or during transitions between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.

In addition to what's been said, remember that certain budget-friendly phones might lack RCS support due to hardware limitations or software restrictions. Always check the manufacturer's website or support forums for confirmation.

It’s also worth noting that Google is working to standardize RCS globally, so even if your carrier doesn't currently support it, it might in the near future. Another option is to join Google's beta programs for the Messages app, where upcoming features, including enhanced RCS capabilities, can be tested before they are widely released.
