Can I stop autoplay videos on Instagram?

Asked Dec 16, 2024, 10:49 AM Viewed 443 times

I've been using Instagram a lot recently, and I've noticed that videos start playing automatically when I scroll through my feed. This can be quite distracting and annoying, especially when I'm in quiet places like libraries or during meetings. I would like to know if there's a way to stop videos from autoplaying on Instagram. Is it possible on both iOS and Android? \\nI tried looking through the settings but couldn't find anything useful. Maybe I'm missing something. Any advice or workarounds would be appreciated!

Launch the Instagram app on your iPhone. Tap on your profile picture at the bottom right, then tap on the three lines at the top right to access the Menu. Select "Settings and Privacy". Look for "Cellular Data Use" or "Data Usage". Turn on "Use Less Data", which will prevent videos from preloading when you're not on Wi-Fi. This won't stop autoplay, but it can reduce data consumption, which impacts autoplay to some extent.

Launch the app on your Android device. Tap on your profile picture, then the three horizontal bars at the top right corner to open the Menu, and select "Settings and Privacy". Navigate to "Data Usage" and enable "Use Less Data".

Although Instagram does not currently allow users to completely disable autoplay, using the "Use Less Data" feature can help manage it slightly as it makes videos load in lower quality unless you choose to watch them, thus reducing burdensome data usage.

Unfortunately, if you need to completely disable autoplay on Instagram, it might not be possible natively at this time. Let’s hope they add this feature soon!

This isn't a fix, but it can help manage the disturbance in quiet environments. By keeping your phone on silent, at least you won't have unexpected sounds.

Some third-party apps can alter how Instagram functions, but proceed with caution as they often violate Instagram's terms of service and can lead to account suspension or banning.

Use Instagram through a web browser on your mobile device. Some browsers have settings that can help disable video autoplay globally.

While these aren't perfect solutions, they can help minimize the disruption. Hopefully, Instagram will release more customizable settings regarding video autoplay in the future.

Another aspect to consider is your internet connection. If your data plan is limited, enabling any data-saving features on your phone or through your data provider settings can also help reduce autoplay quality.

Additionally, consider reaching out to Instagram support with a feature request. If enough users express interest in disabling autoplay, it might encourage them to include such a setting in future updates.

One practical step you can take if you're frequently in quiet environments is to use headphones or earphones. This can help control audio levels from autoplay videos while still allowing you to be engrossed in your feed.

Moreover, placing your phone face down when not in use might help avoid distractions from unexpected autoplay content!
