How to Screen Record on iPhone

Asked Dec 3, 2024, 10:30 AM Viewed 1734 times

I'm trying to record some activities on my iPhone screen for a project tutorial, but I can't figure out how to do it. Is there an in-built feature or do I need to download a third-party app? Any detailed guidance would be much appreciated. Additionally, are there any limitations or tips I should be aware of while using this feature?

Apple provides a built-in feature for screen recording on iPhones, available from iOS 11 and later. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Enable Screen Recording:

    • Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.
    • Under "More Controls," find "Screen Recording" and tap the green "+" icon to add it to your Control Center.
  2. Recording Your Screen:

    • Open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen (on iPhone X and later) or swiping up from the bottom (on older models).
    • Tap the Screen Recording button (a circle inside a circle). Wait for the 3-second countdown to begin recording.
  3. Stop Recording:

    • To stop, open the Control Center again and tap the red Screen Recording button, or tap the red status bar at the top of the screen and select "Stop".
    • Your recording will be saved in the Photos app.

Limitations & Tips:

  • Screen recordings do not capture everything: notifications and calls will be included unless Do Not Disturb mode is enabled.
  • No audio is recorded unless the microphone is turned on (to enable, long press the Screen Recording button and tap the Microphone Audio icon).
  • For longer tutorials, ensure your phone has sufficient storage.

If these steps don't work or if additional features are necessary, consider third-party apps like DU Recorder or TechSmith Capture.

Screen recording on an iPhone is pretty straightforward since iOS 11, as it has this feature built-in.

Follow these steps to enable and use it:

  1. Add Screen Recording to the Control Center:

    • Open Settings > tap on Control Center > then Customize Controls.
    • Add "Screen Recording" by tapping the 'plus' sign next to it.
  2. Start Recording:

    • Access the Control Center (swipe down from the top-right of the screen or up from the bottom).
    • Tap the Screen Recording icon to start. There's a 3-second delay before it begins.
  3. Finish Recording:

    • To stop, tap the red bar at the top or go back to the Control Center and press the recording button again.

Considerations:

  • For audio, enable the microphone by long-pressing the Screen Recording button first.
  • Having enough storage is crucial for longer recordings.

If Apple's built-in features are not sufficient for your needs, there are third-party apps like ScreenFlow or ReplayItpro providing more functionalities. However, for most tasks, the built-in tool should suffice.

Adding to what's already been said, I'd like to point out a few extra tips:

  • Microphone Access: If you want to record external audio, long-press the screen recording button in the Control Center and ensure the microphone is turned on.
  • Editing: After recording, you can edit your screen recording from within the Photos app to remove unwanted parts and fine-tune your tutorial.
  • Third-party Apps: Although the built-in function is powerful, apps like AZ Screen Recorder or Record it! can sometimes offer improved performance or extra features like annotation.

Remember to start with a fully charged device or keep it plugged in if you expect your recording to be long. Also, free up some storage beforehand to avoid interruptions.
