How to transfer WhatsApp chats to Telegram?

Asked Dec 18, 2024, 10:48 AM Viewed 1589 times

I've recently decided to move from WhatsApp to Telegram for my messaging needs. One major concern I have is how to transfer my existing WhatsApp chat history, including text messages, media, and other files, to Telegram. Is there a straightforward way or tool that can help with this process on either Android or iOS? I would appreciate detailed steps or recommendations on how to accomplish this without losing important conversations.

On WhatsApp, open the chat you want to transfer, tap on the three-dots menu in the top-right corner, select 'More', then 'Export chat'. You'll be given an option to include media or not. Choose according to your need.

After choosing the export option, select 'Email'. This will send the complete chat (including media if selected) to your email.

Open Telegram on the same device, then go to your email and download the attachment if needed. You can then open the chat text (usually in a .txt or similar format) and manually copy parts of it into your Telegram chats.

As for media files like images or videos, you will need to manually download them to your device and then upload them to Telegram from your device's gallery.

Please note that this process can be a bit tedious and doesn't result in a full migration of chat history like the way WhatsApp allows between Android devices. The transfer will require some manual effort.

Best of luck!

Unfortunately, as of now, there isn't a direct feature to transfer WhatsApp chats to Telegram comprehensively. However, you can use the email export feature in WhatsApp as a workaround.

  • Open the WhatsApp chat you wish to transfer.

    • Tap on the contact's name or group title to enter 'Contact Info' or 'Group Info'.
    • Scroll down, select 'Export Chat', then choose whether you want to attach media or not.
  • After selecting 'Export Chat', send the chat history to your email.

    • This will provide you a copy of the messages and media via email, which you can access later.
  • Open the chat file from your email.

    • You can now manually copy and paste the text or upload media files back to your desired Telegram contact or group chat.

For media files, you will have to download them first and then share them manually through the Telegram app.

Keep in mind that there's no automated way to preserve timestamps or the original chat format.

  • Navigate to the specific chat in WhatsApp.

    • Tap on the three-dots menu > 'More' > 'Export chat'.
    • Choose whether to include media files or not. Opt for media if those are also needed on Telegram.
  • Send the chat export to your email.

    • Open your email application, and you'll find the exported chat attached as a .zip or .txt file.
  • Log into your email and download the exported chat.

    • Open Telegram and start a new conversation with the respective contact.
    • Manually copy-paste the text or integrity check with the contact involved.
  • Media files need to be downloaded and then shared via Telegram separately from your gallery or file manager.

This manual method will allow you to keep at least the content, though maintaining conversation integrity with timestamps and threading isn't possible with this approach.

Hopefully, this method gives you a workable solution, though a fully automated route doesn't exist yet.
